Garner State Park: The Rio Frio, The Edward’s Plateau & The Texas Hill Country

Our Garner State Park experience would not have been what it was without Ranger Frank Roberts, Interpretive Specialist.

Our first day in the park we had the opportunity to speak with Frank in his office. A more gracious and hospitable man there may not be. Frank is also a fount of knowledge about the flora, fauna, geology and history of Garner State Park and the Texas Hill Country region. To top it all,  he plays a mean guitar with a strong singing voice.

Frank directed us to the Texas Escarpment Live Oak in the nearby town of Rio Frio. A great bike ride to an interesting piece of local natural history.

A personal invitation was extended to his mid-morning Edward’s Plateau geology presentation and an afternoon guided hike the next day. We took him up on both and were not disappointed, tuckered out but not disappointed.

Frank needs to write a book; my fear is lots of the knowledge Frank holds regarding Garner SP and the local area will disappear with his retirement.
